It was a lovely Friday Spring morning and the turn out was very good. The weather definitely helps us all. We all assembled at the Cutlers Hall, Sheffield to begin our tour of the magnificent building and to learn more about its heritage.
Our guide for the tour was Richard Vardy – Deputy Beadle. The main staircase is very impressive and that’s where we began. There was a lift available for those that needed it.
The Cutlers’ Company was established by a parliamentary Act of Incorporation in 1624 and for almost four hundred years has sought to maintain the standards and quality of Sheffield manufactured cutlery and steel products and to promote the name of Sheffield.
As manufacturing in the region has changed over the centuries, so the Company reflects this by highlighting the innovation in the region as well as upholding Sheffield’s proud heritage. The Hall has a very interesting history and many traditions which Richard kindly took the time to explain to us. It is a large building with many rooms, cutlery and silver showcases but luckily we could sit on the rather ornate seating as needed. Many of our members have problems walking or standing for long periods of time.
The Main Hall is the most impressive with beautiful crystal chandeliers and having a minstrel gallery that is still being used at banquets today. Please view the image gallery to see some of our photos
Once the tour was over we all thanked Richard who had done a great job and then we headed off to nearby Strada for refreshments and lunch.
On arrival at Strada in Leopold Square, we were shown to our table which was ready and waiting. We were all pleased to sit down and relax. Strada kindly donated a free drink to everyone which was very generous of them as there were 13 of us. We all ordered a main course (which was also covered by the club funds) and everyone’s meal came out at the same time looking very tempting. Refreshed, happy and catching up with each other made a perfect end to another lovely treat. These monthly treats do make a massive difference and give us something to look forward to. Sharing time with others who truly understand our situation.
Special thanks go to Richard from the Cutlers Hall, the team at Strada and most of all to Claire (Cancer Treat Club Founder) for organising everything so well.
Until next time…
